Disappointing first visit to the Maxville Community Market

Estimated read time 3 min read

We were so excited when we found out there is a farmers market in Maxville, ON. Maxville hosts the Glengarry Highland Games each summer. I remember when I was younger wanting to go and my parents took me. I was so excited about finding haggis in Canada! That’s another story, haggis, and the highland games. I was very excited to find out there was a Maxville Community Market. It’s held on Friday afternoons throughout the summer and into the early fall, so a little more planning is needed to visit this farmers market. But, I made the plans, took the Friday afternoon off and we got into the car and made the journey there.

The drive was surprisingly busy. I suspect everyone was racing out of Ottawa at the end of the week back home. There was construction along the way and we were detoured a good 20 – 25 minutes. We eventually got to Maxville, drove by the market, found parking, and were on our way! Just as we were reaching the entrance to the market and voice said, “Ma’am no dogs allowed in the market.”, and the disappointment hit. I don’t recall seeing any notices on their Facebook page about no dogs allowed. After some digging, sending messages on the Maxville Community Market Facebook page, and emails to The Review it seems that the park, King George Park, where the Maxville Community Market is held does not allow dogs due to regulations by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit.

There is some history surrounding the King George Park. It seems there was a hotel on that spot that was destroyed in a first in 1921. It came back in 1923 and thrived for years. Now there is a park and mural on that spot in its memory.

I’m planning a second visit in a couple of weeks just before the 2023 Thanksgiving weekend. Hopefully, the market will be still open. It did look like a cute little market. Stay tuned!
