Try this beautiful tea infused fruit salad

I like fruit and berries in particular.  But sometimes just eating fruit plain, while very enjoyable, can get tiresome.  I found this great fruit salad recipe a few years ago that everyone I make it for, really enjoys. The addition of mint in particular seems to add a refreshing taste and reminder for people.  The recipe is below and is from Once Upon a Chef in the references.  My take on this would be the modified version where instead of orange or lemon juice added, a cold brew tea and tea leaves are added instead.

Tea Infused Fruit Salad Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs of strawberry sliced
  • 3 big oranges or 8-10 small tangerines or clementines
  • Bunch of mint*
  • ½ c orange juice
  • 2-3 tbsp brown sugar**

Directions:

  1. Wash and slice strawberries.
  2. Peel and chop up oranges. If you’re using tangerines or clementines, I find just peeling and pulling them apart into segments is sufficient.  No chopping of the oranges required.
  3. Put all the fruit into a bowl.
  4. Wash and chop up the mint into small pieces.
  5. Mix the orange juice, mint and brown sugar together.
  6. Pour orange juice mixture over the chopped fruit and mix together well.
  7. Serve like this or chill in refrigerator before serving.

Recipe Notes:

* The size of the “bunch” is very subjective.  Put in ask much mint as you feel is necessary or that suits your taste.  I prefer more mint than less and everyone I’ve made this dish for remarks favourably on the mint.  Mentions how fresh it tastes and smells.

** The original recipe in [1] calls for brown sugar and brown sugar is what I used in this case. But I have made this recipe many times with different kinds of fruits and different kinds of sweeteners.  I’ve used white sugar, honey, maple syrup, agave syrup.  So use what you prefer and also the amount is to taste as well.

Modifications for future versions:

The main modification to this original recipe is to use a cold brew tea of some kind instead of the fruit juice and to use dried tea leaves instead of mint leaves.  Some possible tea and fruit pairings are given below.

Alternate tea choice:

I think almost any tea could be used and paired nicely with different fruits.  Each of Detoxify, Refreshing Lemon Ginger and Berry Yummy I think would go nicely as replacements for the juice in the original recipe.  I think for the Detoxify and Refreshing Lemon Ginger fruits such as apples, pears, oranges, strawberries, mangoes, peaches would go well.  I would probably stick to two and no more than three different fruits.  For the Berry Yummy I would definitely go with berries, such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries or whatever other berries are in season.  And perhaps two to three different types of berries.

Note:

I’m no cook, chef or baker so everything I make is based on the enjoyment of creating something new, cooking, baking and especially tea!  I hope you enjoy the recipes, both making them and the tasting the results!
